About the Melbourne Seventh Day Baptist Church
Looking for a vibrant church presenting God's plain truth?
The Seventh Day Baptist Church, Melbourne is a Christ-centred, bible-based Baptist Church worshiping on the 7th day Sabbath. We uphold the great bible truths of God's grace, mercy, justice, forgiveness and everlasting love. Our mission is to help every person grow in God's grace.
We are Baptists
Seventh Day Baptists hold many beliefs in common with Baptists. Like many Baptists:
- Seventh Day Baptists believe in salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
- Seventh Day Baptists believe the Bible is inspired by God and the authority both for our faith and our daily conduct.
- Seventh Day Baptists practise baptism of believers by immersion.
- Seventh Day Baptists support freedom of thought under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
- Seventh Day Baptists practise a congregational form of church government. Every member of the church has the right to participate in the decision making process of the church.
We are Baptists with a difference
Seventh Day Baptists enter into God's sabbath rest each Sabbath (Saturday). In doing so, we are responding to God's gracious invitation to set aside 24 hours a week to dwell with Him, undistracted by the hustle and bustle of life.
When God created the world, He rested with Adam and Eve on the seventh day. At Sinai, he reminded his covenant people to enter into his Sabbath rest. Isaiah reminds us that this call to enter God's sabbath rest extends to people from every nation (Isaiah 56). And the book of Hebrews reminds us that "there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God" (Hebrews 4:9).
We willingly accept God's call to dwell with Him in His holy time.
We believe in unity, truth and holiness
The Eternal God created a good world which belongs to Him (Psalm 24:1). Every person who dwells in this world is both biologically related and equally valuable in God's sight (Acts 17:26). We, therefore, welcome people from every nation, tribe, language and people into the unity of His community (Ephesians 4:1–6; Revelation 14:6).
As a community of faith, we emphasise the major themes of the Bible, faithfully preaching the truth of the gospel and the kingdom of God, salvation by grace, and personal obedience to God's will (Matthew 24:14; Titus 2:11; Romans 16:26). We stand against those who major in the minors, whose teachings fly in the face of the truth of scripture, or who promote controversies (Matthew 7:15; Luke 6:39; 2 Timothy 2:23; Titus 3:9). While we vigorously up-hold the truth of scripture, we do not interfere with other churches or groups (Romans 14:13).
We believe that God has called every believer into a covenant relationship with Him, where each believer experiences new life through God leading to an experience of joy, peace, love and personal holiness (Luke 22:20; Ephesians 3:14–17; Galatians 5:22; 1 Peter 1:15). Personal holiness extends from the motivations of our hearts, to the things we place in our bodies, to the worship of the Creator God alone; that we may truly be the temple of the Almighty God (Ephesians 2:19–22). As such, we reject the use of harmful substances such as alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs, as they desecrate the image of God in a person (1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Proverbs 31:4; Romans 8:15); and we reject any form of compromise with idolatry, including popular festivals whose origins are pagan (Exodus 20:3, 4; 1 Corinthians 10:14).
The Seventh Day Baptist Church is not built on any cult of personality. We have no founder, nor prophet, outside of Jesus Christ Himself (Luke 24:19). And we rejoice in the fundamental truth of scripture: that our Lord Jesus Christ bore our sins, enabling us to rejoin the family of God (1 Peter 2:24; Romans 8:14).
Church leadership is provided by Pr Joseph Alegre. We welcome everyone who is called to freedom in Jesus Christ to come worship with us.
Pastor Joseph G. Alegre
In 1975, Pastor Leon Lawton, Executive Vice President of the Seventh Day Baptist Missionary society, issued a challenge to a young, Spanish-speaking Argentinian. The challenge was to move his wife and young family half a world away to establish what would become the first Seventh Day Baptist congregation in Australia.
Jose Alegre rose to that challenge. He and his wife, Beatriz, moved their three young children to start a faithful church that would witness and minister to Jesus Christ in Melbourne, Australia.
During the week, Jose and Beatriz supported their family working as an engineering draftsman and translator, respectively. But after work and during weekends, the pair would faithfully work to proclaim the gospel.
In 1978, after three years of preparation, Jose and Beatriz were ready to commence public worship. They publicised the newly-formed congregation through posters, home visits and announcements in newspapers and on radio. Soon, the nucleus of a viable church was formed, and the Seventh Day Baptist witness to the liberty of the gospel had begun in Melbourne.
Since then, this Seventh Day Baptist congregation has faithfully witnessed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, and the liberty believers have in Christ. We have an unwavering commitment to declaring and living the truths we find in scripture. Our desire is to reflect the love of Jesus Christ within our congregation and to declare the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our community.
